How does the plus/minus system in hockey work? I thought I knew but it must have changed.?
I thought you get a plus if you are on the ice when your team scores and a minus if you are on the ice when the opponent scores but this cannot be the case based on the Carolina game tonight.
You get a plus if you are on the ice when your team scored an EVEN STRENGTH or SHORTHANDED goal. You get a minus when you are on the ice and the other team scores an EVEN STRENGTH or SHORTHANDED goal. POWERPLAY goals do not count towards the plus/minus.
ADD: I took a look at the Carolina game box score. 4 of the 9 goals came on the powerplay, so they didn't affect the players' plus/minus.
