In recent months, much of the talk in the game industry has been surrounded by rumors of Sony and its PlayStation 3 Slim. The product, if it exists, which promises be smaller and, more importantly, cheaper.
I'll be the first to admit I am excited by the possibility that the Slim hit shelves stores. I called Sony several times to lower the price of the PlayStation 3. I think the key is to remain relevant for Sony this generation of game consoles.
But as the PS3 Slim kept us guessing a report to hit the Web on Wednesday alleging that Microsoft may be planning to get rid of the Xbox 360 Pro to offer two models for Xbox 360 – the room and the Elite. Great. But what about a drink?
The Xbox 360 is a beast. It's huge. Its DVD drive is very high. And its power supply is both large and heavy.
The Xbox 360 is also not nearly as reliable as competing products. Since its launch, we have been inundated with story after story another on the "red ring of death" – a problem that occurs when three red rings around the Xbox 360 power button starts blinking, indicating that the console is inoperable and must be sent back to Microsoft than it fixed.
The RROD number of reported cases has decreased in recent months but has Microsoft left a black eye that has yet to recover.
Sony and its range of hardware improvement, I think it's clear that Microsoft has to do the same. You need an Xbox 360 Slim.
Why is it necessary
I think an Xbox 360 Slim help solve almost any problem from Microsoft. Potentially fit very well into existing set-up home theater. If the height to its name, Slim also ditch the power brick. Your new power supply would be more smaller and more manageable. These two changes alone would make many current Xbox 360 owners happy.
But it goes beyond that. A Slim Xbox 360, Microsoft may be "do more". It will address the issues of the console has experienced, like the DVD drive terribly strong. Also appoint the Xbox 360 failure issues that seem to disappear. More importantly, it could address a major shortcoming of the console: the lack of a HD unit.
Yes, I think a Slim Xbox 360 will have a Blu-ray. I know it would be like giving money to the enemy, Backer Sony format, but since Blu-ray increase in popularity this year, I do not think Microsoft has much of a choice. Until streaming HD content has reached critical mass, and came in millions households, Blu-ray is still the main next-generation home entertainment format.
Although currently can access streaming content through the Xbox 360 is not enough. A Blu-ray drive allows Microsoft to fend off Sony's central argument, which asserts that because the PlayStation 3 has a Blu-ray, worth its price of $ 400. It's a valid argument. It is also an argument for Microsoft, without a Blu-ray on the Xbox 360, has no answer. This is unacceptable.
Looking ahead
At this point, I have no doubt that Sony will launch the PS3 Slim sometime near future. It makes perfect sense for the company, because it is desperately trying to regain lost market share.
Microsoft should follow suit. The Xbox 360 is a great console. I like playing games on it. But not perfect. It is in desperate need of an update. And an Xbox 360 Slim might be the way to make more consumers happy. More importantly, could Microsoft to help fend off Sony's rise in the market if a PS3 Slim released.
