Why Absorbent Mats & Pads Could Save You A Fortune
Absorbent mats & pads are incredible things really - small, seemingly innocuous rolls of material, yet capable of absorbing massive volumes of liquid. More importantly, they're able to hold that liquid in safely for a long period of time, in some cases chemically bonding in such a way that the liquid becomes crystallised. With some medium sized cushions and mats able to absorb over a hundred litres, when it comes to serious spillages it's always helpful to have one or two around.
For the price they're a very inexpensive solution, and when you consider the consequences of not having a suitable method of absorbing a spillage, they are excellent value. In almost all industries, businesses workplaces, public areas and even the home, liquid spillages occur frequently. Whether it's a dropped cup of coffee, a bottle of oil, water leaking from a pipe or a more serious liquid spillage such as a chemical spillage or a bodily fluid, the dangers are very real.
Increasingly the flooring used in businesses, shops and public places is hard, flat and smooth. Even in the home linoleum, tiles and wooden flooring is popular, but the problem with all of these is that they do not absorb liquids very well, if at all. Of course, to some extent this is an advantage - if liquid spills are likely to happen often. But when a spillage does happen, these hard floors present two challenges. The first is that the liquid acts as a lubricating film between the floor and anything which comes into contact with it - such as a foot. This means that the surface becomes extremely slippery, and accidents frequently happen in this way. The second challenge is that hard, non absorbent floors allow spillages to spread very quickly. It's always amazing over just how wide an area a single cup of drink can spread. Industrial cleaning fluids, chemicals and other spillages can prove to be many times more problematic.
These two challenges need to be addressed, and absorbent mats and pads can make a big difference in reducing the risks associated in both cases. Spill mats are able to absorb tremendous quantities of liquid very quickly, as well as helping to prevent it from spreading any further. This enables you to throw down a spill mat quickly, restricting the area over which the hazard spreads. In many cases these spill mats have undersides which grip the floor, allowing passage across the area without the risk normally associated with a spilled liquid on a hard floor. This is ideal if you can't afford the time, or simply don't have the facility, to block off an entire area during the cleaning operation.
If someone falls as a result of a liquid that was spilt, or which leaked onto the floor, an injury can easily occur. In today's world of quick litigation it is more than likely that legal action will follow with the resulting compensation costing significant sums of money. This is in addition to the cost of any sick leave required, the cost of extra staff to cover for the absence, or the loss of income as a result of being a person short. All of these costs can be avoided by simply having a few relatively inexpensive absorbent mats & pads handy in locations where spillages are most likely to occur.
In some cases a spillage may occur which only needs a very simple, straightforward kind of spill mat to just be placed over the affected area. But it is worth bearing in mind that there may be instances where the liquid or chemical is hazardous in some way. It will be even more critical in such cases to make sure that the spillage is contained as quickly as possible, with an absorbent mat placed down quickly, with socks, cushions or booms laid around the area to cordon off the spread of the liquid if the volume is excessive.
But in these cases special spill kits may be required. If the chemical is hazardous, as many chemicals in industry are, then specialised spill kits will be required, and often the handling of these will need to be carried out by those experienced in dealing with the particular issue. But bodily fluids are also hazardous - easily spreading diseases and infections, and so not only will absorbent mats & pads be required in such cases, but as well as spill mats you should wear protective gloves, and make certain that the liquid is cleaned up safely and completely, and that the area is sterilized thoroughly afterwards.
