Professor Layton vs. Mario Kart on the DS?

I've been wanting to get a new DS game for a while, and my choices are limited to Mario Kart or Professor Layton (first a peculiar people or second Diabolical Box) What game would keep me in the interest of the longest? I basically like all types of game, and if your teacher Layton, which one is better, one of the first or second you just left? Thank you!
